About Park Chung-hee
Before Park Chung-hee's entry into South Korean politics, he had served in the Imperial Army of Manchuko, Northeast China, and the Republic of Korea Army, the latter through which he became a major general. He led a military coup through the Military Revolutionary Committee in May 1961 to end the second republic. The then-president, Yun Bo-seon, resigned in March 1962 and Park became the country’s third president. His 17-year rule was marked by authoritarianism, limited civil liberties and immense economic growth.
Family Life
He was the son of Bek Nam-eui and Park Sung-bin. He had his daughter, Park Geun-hye, who became South Korea’s 18th and first female president in 2013, with his first wife, Kim Ho-nam. After their divorce, he married Yuk Young-soo, the mother of his three children.
Assassination
His own close friend and director of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency Kim Jae-gyu shot him dead on 26 October 1979 at a safe house.
