About Parmigianino
The 16th-century Italian painter Parmigianino is most notable for works such as “Self-portrait in a Convex Mirror”, “Madonna with the Long Neck” and “Vision of Saint Jerome”. As of 2021, the latter painting, which was made in the mid-1520s, can be found in the National Gallery, London, UK. The painting shows Christian priest and confessor Saint Jerome sleeping near the crucifix.
Family
The late Renaissance painter was born to Filippo Mazzola and Donatella Abbati.
Career
With five works of his, including the “Self-portrait in a Convex Mirror” and “Circumcision of Jesus”, Parmigianino traveled to Rome in 1524 to work for Pope Clement VII.
During the 1520s and 1530s, he painted the “Madonna and Child with Saints”, “Madonna with Saint Zachariah” (Uffizi), and “Madonna con la Rosa (Dresden)”.
In 1534, his work “Madonna dal collo lungo” (the Madonna with the Long Neck) was set to be placed in the Chapel of the family of Elena Baiardi.
Some of his other famous works include ‘Portrait of Lorenzo Cybo”, “Saint Barbara”, “Bardi Altarpiece” and “The Holy Family with Angels”.
As an etcher, Parmigianino worked with Italian goldsmith Giovanni Jacopo Caraglio.
