About Pascal Lamy
The French businessman is most famous for his former position as Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). He was appointed to chair the Paris Peace Forum in 2019. He also chaired such committees as the French National Committee of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council and the Danone mission committee. He’s been publicly known as a member of the French Socialist Party.
Early Life & Education
The Levallois-Perret native was a student at the Sciences Po Paris and a graduate of the École des Hautes Études Commerciales. He also studied law at the Faculty of Law of Paris.
Career
He started life as a civil servant at the General Inspectorate of Finance and the Treasury. He later became the Secretary General of the Interministerial Committee which sought to create better financial opportunities for small to medium sized enterprises.
In 1981, he served as the advisor to the Minister of Economy and Finance, Jacques Delors. He was eventually privileged to be appointed as Deputy Head of Pierre Mauroy cabinet in 1983.
He switched to business, and as a senior executive at Crédit Lyonnais, helped facilitated the privatisation of the bank. In 2005, he was elected to head the Word Trade Organisation. Before his tenure ended in 2013, he signed a WTO infrastructure contract.
As an affiliate professor at CEIBS, Lamy gave lectures regarding topics such as globalisation, international trade and regional integration.
Awards
He received the Global Economy Prize for his pioneering contributions to the global economy. He was honored with the Globalist of the Year award from the Canadian International Council in 2009.
Authorship
He wrote reports on global governance and co- authored several inspiring books such as 2020’s “Strange New World” with N. Gnesotto, Odile Jacob; and 2014’s “Quand la France s’éveillera” with Odile Jacob. He also authored “The Geneva Consensus: Making Trade Work for All” in 2013.
Personal Life
He married lawyer Genevieve Luchaire in 1972. The couple have 3 children.
