About Pat Nixon
Before Pat Nixon rose to become a national figure, she was a tutor at a high school in Whittier, California. She also took a number of part-time jobs including acting to supplement her income. Some popular movies that she appeared in include “Small Town Girl” and “Becky Sharp”. It was through the acting gigs that she met her future husband Richard Nixon. The two married in 1940.
Her husband was named the Vice President of the United States in 1953, making her the country’s Second Lady. At the initial stages, Pat wasn’t in support of her husband’s nomination because she didn’t like campaigns. While in office, she undertook a number of charitable works in schools, orphanages, and hospitals.
After her husband was elected the President of the United States in 1969, she automatically became the First Lady. She continued her goodwill works and promoted volunteerism.
Family
Her dad, William M. Ryan Sr., was a successful businessman. Her mother was called Katherine Halberstadt. She was originally named Thelma Catherine Ryan. She spent her early life with her brothers Thomas and William Jr. Her step-siblings are called Matthew and Neva Bender.
She and Richard had two children called Tricia Nixon Cox and Julie Nixon Eisenhower.
Education
She attended Excelsior High School and Fullerton College before enrolling at the University of Southern California.
Trivia
She and her husband were cast in a 1938 play entitled “The Dark Tower”.
Growing up, she also worked as a janitor.
