About Patricio Aylwin
As Chile's president from 1990 - 1994, following the 1973 military coup that brought Augusto Pinochet Ugarte to power, Patricio Aylwin Azocar was the country's first democratically elected president. He was credited with aiding Chile's return to democracy.
Background
The Vina del Mar native graduated law school in 1943 and taught at the University of Chile and later the Catholic University.
His political career began in 1945, when he joined the Falange Nacional and was elected president of the party (1950-51). From 1958 - 1989, he was president of the Christian Democratic Party of Chile. In 1965, he was elected to the Senate until the 1973 coup. He was elected as the CDP's presidential candidate in 1989.
During his presidency, the number of Chileans living in poverty fell dramatically. In 1994, he was succeeded by Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle.
He died on April 19, 2016, from natural causes of respiratory insufficiency after suffering a brain injury.
