About Patty Wagstaff
Patty Wagstaff, an American pilot and former US national aerobatic champion, was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2004. She is regarded as a pioneer in the field of aerobatics and received more awards than any other female competitor of her day.
Background and Notable Achievements
She graduated from high school and left for Australia. She started taking flying lessons in Alaska, where she started her own flying career. Her maiden flight was in a little plane over the wilderness of Alaska. She eventually attained her single and multi-engine land in a Cessna 185 aircraft and became a Certified Flight and Instrument Instructor.
She qualified for the US Aerobatic Team in 1985 and participated until 1996. In 1994, the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum displayed her Goodrich-sponsored Extra 260 alongside Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Vega. She led all American pilots in scoring in the 1996 World Aerobatics Championship.
She claimed the Betty Skelton First Lady of Aerobatics prize six times straight, from 1988 to 1994. She started educating Kenya Wildlife Service pilots in 2001. She is an emeritus board member of the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum.
