About Pau Casals
Pau Casals, who sometimes went as Pablo Casals, was a 20th-century Spanish musician who influenced many other artists. His legacy makes him one of the most well-known figures in music and peace. He was a cellist, conductor, composer, humanist, and ardent champion for freedom and democracy.
International Career
He achieved fame in Paris at the age of twenty-three under the direction of the famous conductor Charles Lamoureux, launching a successful career as a soloist that took him to the world's top concert halls. When the First World War broke out in 1914, he relocated to New York and resumed his musical travels.
Later Years and Death
The Spanish musician returned to Barcelona in 1919 and established the Pau Casals Orchestra, which he led until 1936. With the onset of the Spanish Civil War and Franco's triumph in 1939, he went to Prades, France, for the first years of his exile, then to San Juan, Puerto Rico, from 1957 onwards, where he died in 1973 at the age of ninety-six.
His bones were relocated to the cemetery in his hometown of El Vendrell in November 1979, with the return of democratic institutions and in accordance with his desires.

Pablo Casals' musical output and legacy bear witness to his almost century-long career as a performer, conductor, composer, and educator.
As a performer, his innovations in bowing technique and fingering propelled him to the top of the modern cello virtuosos, making him one of the most known musicians of the twentieth century.
Trivia
In 1963, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest civilian honor in the United States. The medal was presented to him by U.S. president Lyndon B. Johnson.
