About Paul Dirac
Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac is the full name of the great British theoretical physicist of the 20th century. Many scientists regard him as the founding father of quantum mechanics and electrodynamics.
Background & Education
Dirac was born and raised in his family home in Bristol, England. He attended the Merchant Venturer's Secondary School and then enrolled in Bristol University to read electrical engineering. After graduating with a first-class Engineering degree in 1921, Dirac read mathematics at the university for two years. He later became a mathematics research student at St. John's College, Cambridge. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1926 and became Cambridge University's Lucasian Professor of Mathematics in 1932.
Major Discovery
Dirac's research and findings were focused on the mathematical and theoretical areas of quantum electrodynamics and quantum mechanics. He formulated a wave equation that was the first to theoretically prove special relativity in quantum mechanics. In addition, his equation, "Dirac equation," was the first to prove the existence of the previously unknown form of matter, antimatter.
Honors
In 1993, Dirac and Erwin Schrödinger were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their discoveries in atomic theory. In addition, Dirac was a recipient of the Royal Medal, Copley Medal, and Max Planck Medal.
