About Paul Kruger
A very popular Boer during the 1870s, Paul Kruger was appointed the vice-president of the South African Republic in 1877. He served in that position for three years and was made an executive member of the Triumvirate in 1883.
That same year, he was made the President of the country and negotiated for the London Convention in 1884. He would be remembered as one of the earliest men who fought for the independence of South Africa.
Family
He was one of the children of Casper Jan Hendrik Kruger and Elsje Steyn. In 1842, he married Maria du Plessis, but she died four years later alongside their first child. He became the husband of Gezina du Plessis in 1847.
Interesting facts about Paul Kruger
He became an assistant field cornet at age 17.
Growing up, he only studied the Bible.
The indigenes referred to him as “Uncle Paul (Oom Paul)”.
