About Paul Morphy
Although his time in the chess world was short, Paul Morphy left an indelible mark in chess and was considered to be the first greatest American chess player.
Early Years and Chess Career
The New Orleans native learned how to play chess by watching games between his father and uncle. But his family quickly realized his potential and encouraged him to play. By the time he was 9, Morphy was thought to be one of the best players in the city. When he was 12, he defeated the Hungarian master Johann Löwenthal. He graduated from the University of Louisiana with a degree in law.
Because he was too young to practice law, he took up chess again. After defeating strong masters, Morphy was regarded as the chess champion of the United States.
He spent time in Europe, where he played chess with renowned players. However, Morphy’s short-lived chess career ended as quickly as it had begun when he retired in 1859.
Death
In 1884, he was found dead in his bathtub after suffering a stroke. He was buried at the St. Louis Cemetery in New Orleans.
Legacy
Morphy is still a prominent figure in the chess world. He was mentioned in American writer Walter Tevis’s hit novel “The Queen’s Gambit”, and its Netflix film adaptation as the main character’s favorite chess player.
