About Paul the Octopus
Paul the Octopus was a famous octopus used to predict the outcomes of various soccer matches. The Octopus’s accurate predictions of the 2010 FIFA World Cup brought him global fame and wide recognition as an “Animal Oracle.”
Background
He was hatched at the “Sea Life Centre,” Weymouth, England. He was later moved to Oberhausen, Germany, and kept in one of the chain center tanks.
His name “Paul the Octopus” was derived from the German poem “Der Tintenfisch Paul Oktopus,” written by Boy Lorensen.
Major Predictions & Divinations
During divinations, his keepers presented him with two containers of food. Although the containers were identical, they were covered with the different country flags of the teams in the upcoming soccer match. Whichever container he chose to eat from firstly was considered his prediction of the winning team in the forthcoming fixture.
Paul correctly predicted the winning countries in four of Germany’s games at the 2008 Euros. In addition, he predicted all seven games of the German national team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and correctly predicted Spain as winners of the tournament. In all, he predicted 12 correct outcomes out of 14 soccer matches and amassed a success rate of 85.7%.
