About Paul Tillich
Paul Tillich left behind a legacy as one of the twentieth century’s most influential theologians. The German-American theologian was also a philosopher who focused on existential analysis, ontology and philosophical theology.
Ordained in the Province of Bradenburg as a Lutheran minister in 1912, he went on to teach theology in four German universities from 1924 to 1933. He also served as a theology professor at Harvard Divinity School, Union Theological Seminary and the University of Chicago. His best-known works include “Systemic Theology”, “Dynamics of Faith” and “The Courage to Be”.
Family Life
He was the first of the three children of Mathilde Durselen and Johannes Tillich, a conservative Lutheran pastor. He was married twice: first to Margarethe Wever, who abandoned him in 1919 after getting pregnant for another man, and then to Hannah Werner-Gottschow. He had two children.
Death
He suffered a heart attack and died ten days later, on October 22, 1965.
