Early Life
The G.I. Bill allowed him to attend Columbia University after serving in the United States Navy during World War II.
Career
Harry Cohn, the head of Columbia Pictures, saw "The Burglar", his debut feature picture, and offered to both distribute it and hire Wendkos. Prior to his successful adolescent surf movie trilogy "Gidget," he produced "Tarawa Beachhead," "Jesse James, Bitter Heritage," and other films. He returned to television, directing episodes of "Ben Casey" and the first "Hawaii Five-O."
Personal Life
He was married twice. His first marriage, to Ruth Burnat, lasted from 1953 to 1978, when Ruth died. By Ruth, he fathered a son called Jordan Elkan Wendkos.
Death
He died of stroke in 2009, aged 84.
