About Pedro Calderón de la Barca
The Spanish dramatist and poet earned a reputation as the most accomplished playwright of the Golden age. Notable among his most famous works are “El médico de su honra” in 1635 and “El alcalde de Zalamea” in 1640. A distinctive feature of his plays is their allusion to Christianity.
Early Life
He grew up under the wings of an abusive father. The effects of this abuse shines through many of his plays. He studied theology, arts and law at both the University of Alcalá and Salamanca.
Literary Works
His technique was often compared with Spanish playwright and poet Lope de Vega’s, who developed the forms and the genres that characterised drama in the Golden age. Pedro’s plays had relatively fewer scenes that capture only the most important parts of the storyline. The early 19th Century saw a more passionate interest in his plays, thanks to the translations of German poet August Wilhelm Schlegel.
Trivia
He was born on a boat in the Manzanares River and that explains the name "de la Barca."
