About Pedro I of Brazil
Born into the House of Braganza, Pedro I was sent to Brazil from Portugal during the French invasion in 1807. When his father returned to Lisbon during the 1820 Liberal Revolution, Pedro I became the ruler of Brazil.
Two years later, he declared Brazil’s independence after defeating a number of oppositions. In 1826, he briefly served as the King of Portugal but abdicated the throne two months later. As the ruler of Brazil, he helped them to fight the infamous Cisplatine War. He vacated his throne in 1931 after falling out with quite a large number of citizens.
Family
He was one of the children of King Dom John VI, and his wife Carlota Joaquina of Spain. King Dom Peter III was his grandfather. Pedro I married twice. His first wife Maria Leopoldina of Austria died in 1826. Three years later, he made Amélie of Leuchtenberg his wife. His children included Maria II, Queen of Portugal; João Carlos, Prince of Beira; and Pedro II, Emperor of Brazil.
Recognitions
He was made a Grand Master of some Brazilian orders including the Order of Christ, Order of the Rose, and Order of the Southern Cross.
Death
He suffered from tuberculosis which sent him to his grave in 1834.
Trivia
He was also referred to as "the Liberator".
Pedro I helped to develop Brazil’s first constitution.
