Early Life
He was born Johnny Leonard Roosevelt Martin. He grew up in an impoverished cotton farming family.
Baseball
He signed to play shortstop in the Oklahoma State League for a team in Guthrie, Oklahoma, launching his professional baseball career. At the age of 24, he made his major league debut after playing for five years in the minor leagues with the Cardinals.
With a .500 batting average, five base steals, and five extra-base hits, he dominated the 1931 World Series. He played for Havana's squad in the international league before retiring in the 1950s. He coached and provided radio play-by-play for the Tulsa Oilers in the early 1960s after his playing days.
