About Percy Fawcett
Percy Fawcett, in full Percy Harrison Fawcett, was a highly devoted British explorer, archaeologist, and geographer. He is remembered for mysteriously disappearing in 1925 during his lifelong and vain search for an ancient jungle civilization he called “The Lost City of Z.”
Background & Early Life
He was born in Torquay, Devon, in the United Kingdom. He enrolled at Newton Abbot Proprietary College for his early education. He later entered the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, eventually becoming a captain in June 1897. He ultimately became a decorated war veteran after World War I. However, in 1901 he joined the Royal Geographical Society (RGS).
Early Expeditions
He embarked on seven expeditions into the Amazonian forest between 1906 and 1924, performing mapping tasks on uncharted jungle regions and locating the sources of the Heath River and Rio Verde.
In 1920, he embarked on his first expedition to find the “Lost City of Z.” However, he aborted the quest after he contracted a debilitating sickness and was forced to kill his companion animals.
Disappearance
In April 1925, Fawcett’s last expedition in search of the Lost City of Z departed. Fawcett and his crew mysteriously disappeared without a trace during the quest. Finally, however, his last known writing, dated May 29, 1925, revealed his intention to travel to an uncharted region.
