Peter Breck, in full Joseph Peter Breck, was a veteran American film and stage actor. He had an acting career spanning over 4-decades, beginning in 1956. His notable roles included Nick Barkley in “The Big Valley (1965) and Doc Holiday in “Maverick” – ABC/Warner Bros. TV series.
Early Life & Education
He was born in Rochester, New York. However, his grandparents raised him in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He schooled at John Marshall High School. He then served in the US Navy in the 1940s.
He turned his attention to education again and enrolled at the University of Houston, where he read drama and English. He performed in various college plays and was an intern at the Houston Alley Theatre.
Career Highlights
In 1957, his performances at the Arena Theatre, Washington DC, led American director Robert Mitchum to offer him roles in his films. He then starred in films such as “Thunder Road (1958),” “Black Saddle (1959),” and “The Beatniks.”
Following a contract with the “Warner Brothers studio,” he appeared in most of their top TC, such as “Tenderfoot (1957)” and “Hawaiian Eye (1959).”
He played the character of Nick Barkley from 1965 to 1969 in “The Big Valley.”
Death
After battling dementia for two years, he died aged 82 on February 6, 2012.
