About Peter Shaffer
Peter Shaffer was a highly regarded British playwright, known for having a vast range in his field. He wrote several critically-acclaimed plays; some of which were later adapted into films.
Early Years
Shaffer spent his childhood in London, England, where he lived with his identical twin brother Anthony and his parents, Reka and Jack. He attended Trinity College to study history and was later enlisted as a coal miner during the Second World War. Before becoming a playwright, he worked as a bookstore clerk and a library assistant.
Playwright Career
In 1955, Shaffer presented his first play “The Salt Land” on local television, which earned him positive reviews. However, it was his next play “Five Finger Exercise”, which solidified his profession as a playwright. During the 1970s, Shaffer wrote three plays: “Equus”, “Shrivings”, and “Amadeus.” Both “Equus” and “Amadeus” earned him different Tony Awards.
Shaffer also co-wrote novels with his brother, including “The Woman in the Wardrobe.”

- Tony Award for Best Play (1975 and 1981)
- 1985 Academy Award for Best Writing
- 1985 Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay
He was appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1987 and received his knighthood in 2001. Shaffer was also inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2007.
