Peter Twinn Rank
About Peter Twinn
British entomologist Peter Frank George Twinn, who doubles as a mathematician, is known for decrypting over 100,000 Abwehr communications.
Early Life
The entomologist graduated from the Manchester Grammar School before enrolling at Dulwich College. He earned a degree in mathematics from Brasenose College.
Career
Twinn began his career after being recruited into the Government Code and Cypher School. On the eve of World War II, Twinn became the first British cryptographer to read a German military Enigma message. This cipher device was used to protect vital messages in code to prevent other sects of people from acquiring its information. Twinn worked with well-known figures such as British classics scholar and papyrologist Dilly Knox and mathematician Alan Turing on German Enigma ciphers. He later went on to head the Abwehr Enigma section in 1942.
Notable Publications
Twinn's interest in click beetles urged him to co-author the book "A Provisional Atlas of the Longhorn Beetle (Coleoptera Cerambycidae)" in 1999.
