About Peter Vaughan
Peter Vaughan’s first film role was in the 1959 thriller titled “The 39 Steps”. After playing minor roles in a number of movies and television programs, the English actor rose to fame with his performance in the 1974 sitcom “Porridge” where he portrayed the Grouty character. He brought life into the same character in the 1979 film of similar name.
He established himself in the movie industries with roles like Tom Franklin in the crime series “Chance”, and in the 1981 film “Time Bandits” where he was known as Winston the Ogre.
Family
Outside showbiz, he was known as Peter Ewart Ohm, and was born to Max Ohm, who worked in a bank, and his nurse wife Eva Wright.
Vaughan was married twice. He married his first wife actress Billie Whitelaw in 1952, but the union lasted for fourteen years.
His later marriage to Lillias Walker made him the stepfather of movie star Victoria Burton.
Education
He was a graduate of Uttoxeter Grammar School.
