Philip Ahn was one of the most prolific Asian-American actors of his time, starring in over 180 films in his career. He is best known for being the first Korean-American actor in Hollywood.
Background
Ahn was born in Los Angeles to Korean emigrants. His father, Dosan, was a diplomat. Ahn attended the University of Southern California.
Film Career
In 1935, he received his first acting job in the film, “A Scream in the Night.” It was then that the actor established himself as an actor, often playing different Asian roles in big blockbusters. He also starred in “The General Died at Dawn”, “Daughter of Shanghai”, and the “King of Chinatown.”
During the Second World War, Ahn was often cast as a Japanese villain, which led to him receiving death threats. He also starred in several Korean movies like “Battle Circus” and “Battle Hymn”.
Personal Life
Ahn remained active in the Korean community while living in Los Angeles. He played a role in bringing the Korean Bell of Friendship to San Pedro. In 1954, he opened a Chinese restaurant with his sister. He passed away in 1978 after suffering complications from surgery.
