About Philip Johnson
A believer of the postmodern and modern architecture movements, Philip Johnson designed many skylines in the United States. He gained global recognition for his work on the Glass House which was unveiled in 1949.
After his education, Johnson toured many European countries which gave him the opportunity to work alongside Henry-Russell Hitchcock, a celebrated American architect. In 1930, he was named the director of the Museum of Modern Art’s architecture department.
Private Life
He was born to Louisa Osborn Pope and her lawyer husband Homer Hosea Johnson. His siblings were called Theodate and Jeannette.
He came out as gay in 1993. He was said to be in a relationship with actor Jimmie Daniels.
Education
Johnson graduated from Hackley School and continued at Harvard University.
Awards
The renowned American architect won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1979. A year before that, the American Institute of Architects awarded him with their Gold Medal.
Trivia
He left architecture in 1934 to pursue a career in politics and journalism.
Some prominent structures that he designed were Seagram Building, and Pennzoil Place, which is located in Houston.
