About Philip Larkin
After studying Literature and English Language at the university, Philip Larkin worked as a librarian for almost three decades. It was during this period that he published his first poetry book entitled “The North Ship” which was released in 1945.
Before rising to prominence with his 1955 poetry collection titled “The Less Deceived”, he published two novels which were labelled “A Girl in Winter” and “Jill”.
Private Life
He was the youngest child of Sydney Larkin and Eva Emily. One of his siblings was called Catherine. He was in a sort of relationship with a number of ladies including Monica Jones who worked as a lecturer at Leicester University College.
Education
He studied at St John's College under the University of Oxford.
Honors
Throughout his career, he received many awards including the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry.
Trivia
After Sir John Betjeman’s death, Larkin was offered the Poet Laureate position, but he declined.
In 2003, he was named the best-loved British poet to operate within the last 50 years in a survey organized by Poetry Book Society.
Five years later, he was listed as Britain's best post-war writer by The Times.
He was influenced by some top poets including Thomas Hardy and W. H. Auden.
Between 1961 and 1971, he was a jazz critic for The Daily Telegraph.
