About Phyllis Newman
Phyllis Newman was an award-winning American actress who was known for her roles in countless Broadway, on-screen and theatrical works. Her earliest work came in 1952 when she appeared in the Broadway production titled "Wish You Were Here". One of her first TV roles was in 1959 when she starred in an episode of the crime drama series, "Decoy".
She featured in dozens of works over the course of her career which include "Pleasures and Palaces", "Bye Bye Braverman" (1968), and "The Human Stain" (2003). During the last days of her life, she battled lung disorder which caused her death at the age of 86.
Family Life
Her father was Sigmund Newman and her mother was called Rachel Gottlieb. Her siblings were Shirley and Elaine. Phyllis was married to lyricist and playwright Phyllis Newman from 1960 to 2002. Her children are actress Amanda Green and journalist Adam Green.
Achievements
At the 1962 Tony Awards, she received the "Best Featured Actress in a Musical" prize for her role in "Subways Are for Sleeping". She also picked up an Isabelle Stevenson Award and a Special Tony Award in 2009.
In 1978, her role in "My Mother Was a Fortune-Teller" landed her a nomination for the "Outstanding Actress in a Musical" at the Drama Desk Awards.
