About Pierre Dansereau
Pierre Dansereau’s contributions to the study of ecology earned him the description "fathers of ecology". In 1939, he was employed by the Montreal Botanical Garden, and worked with the organization until 1942. He went on to teach at institutions like the University of Michigan, the Université de Montréal, and Columbia University.
Between 1972 and 1976, he worked at the Université du Québec à Montréal’s Research Centre for Sciences and the Environment as the director. The Canadian ecologist published a number of books including “Harmony and Disorder in the Canadian Environment” and “Biogeography: An Ecological Perspective”.
Personal Life
Dansereau was married to his wife for over seven decades. His cousin Fernand Dansereau is known to be a film director.
Education
He was a product of the University of Geneva.
Recognition
In 1969, he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada. He was also celebrated with honors like the Léo-Pariseau Prize, the Sir John William Dawson Medal, and the Massey Medal from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. In 2001, his name was included in the Canadian Science and Engineering Hall of Fame.
Trivia
The renowned ecologist inspired the documentary titled “An Ecology of Hope” which was released in 2001.
