About Pino Puglisi
Guiseppe Puglisi, better known as Pino Puglisi, was a 20th-century Italian Roman Catholic priest. A native of Brancaccio, Palermo, he was noted for openly challenging the “Mafia” group that controlled his hometown. Unfortunately, the Mafia killed him, and he became the first person to be beatified by the Roman Catholic Church after being murdered by the Mafia.
Early Life & Ordinance
He was born and raised in Brancaccio, Palermo. He entered the Catholic seminary at age 16, and on July 2, 1960, Cardinal Ernesto Ruffini ordained him as a Catholic priest.
Anti-Mafia Activities
In 1990, he became the priest of the Parish in San Gaeta, one of the most troublesome and Mafia-controlled neighborhoods in Palermo. He first provided shelter for underprivileged youth and discouraged them from helping the Mafia in their dealings and dropping out of school.
In his sermons, he preached that people should give leads on the Mafia’s illegal activities to authorities. He refused Mafia money and contracts for church projects and disallowed the “Mafia Men of Honor” to lead the march during religious processions.
Death
The priest was shot and killed outside his house on September 15, 1993—his 56th birthday.
Salvatore Grigoli, one of the Mafia hitmen involved in the killing, later admitted the crime and revealed his final phrase: “I have been expecting you.”
