About Pope Clement VII
Originally called Giulio de' Medici, and later becoming Pope Clement VII, he was the Superior head of the Roman Catholic Church and the general ruler of Papal from November 19, 1523, to September 25, 1534. He has an alias as "the most unfortunate pope."
Background & Early Life
His godfather, Antonio da Sangallo, the Elder, raised him. However, his biological father was Giuliano de Medici, who family enemies killed during the "Pazzi Conspiracy." Medici's mother's identity remains a mystery.
Growing up, he was naturally inclined to the clergy and was involved in several Church activities. He read canon law at the University of Pisa.
Priesthood
He served excellently as the chief advisor to Pope Adrian VI and Pope Leo X. Between 1519 and 1523; he was Florence's gran maestro. He became a Cardinal in 1513.
In 1523, he was elected as Pope of the Catholic Church. However, bankruptcy, invasions, and a strong opposition of the Catholic Church due to the Protestant Reformation characterized Pope Clement VII's reign. England also broke off with the Catholic Church during his reign.
Legacy
He is remembered to have secured and handed Malta Island to the "Knights of Malta." In addition, he also made orders to protect Marranos from the "Portuguese Inquisition."
