About Pope Innocent XII
Pope Innocent XII, otherwise known as Antonio Pignatelli, began working under Pope Urban VIII at age 20. He went on to serve in different positions before he was appointed as the Archbishop of Larissa in the 1650s.
In 1660, he was made the Apostolic Nuncio to Poland and was later named the Cardinal-Priest of San Pancrazio by Pope Innocent XI in 1681.
Pignatelli was considered one of the candidates to lead the Roman Catholic Church after the death of Pope Alexander VIII in 1691. He was later appointed as the Pope of the Church which also made him the leader of Italy’s Papal States. He became popular for his fight against nepotism.
His parents were Porzia Carafa and Francesco Pignatelli. He grew up together with four siblings named Marzio, Paola Maria, Ludovico and Fabrizio.
He graduated from Collegio Romano where he read civil and canon laws.
During his time as the pope, he beatified some well-known personalities including Augustin Kažotić, and Mary de Cervellione.
