About Pope Leo X
Pope Leo X became the leader of the Catholic Church and the Papal States’ ruler after his predecessor, Pope Julius II, the Warrior Pope, passed away in 1513. He was made a cardinal in 1489 by Pope Innocent VIII.
He garnered notoriety for nepotism, having made his nephew the Duke of Urbino and allowing indulgences for persons who donated towards the reconstruction of St. Peter’s Basilica. He was also known for his kind donations towards the needy in the society and being a notable patron of the arts.
Personal Life
He was born Giovanni di Lorenzo de’ Medici to Italian Statesman Lorenzo de’ Medici. He was known to be of a cheerful temper, eloquent and generous.
Legacy
He has been criticized by historians for his excessive spending on himself, friends, charities, the arts and dynastic wars, throwing the papal treasury in debt. He has also been praised for elevating the Church to an association of knowledge and refinement.
Death
He died on 1 December 1521 at age 45 from pneumonia.
