About Pope Paul II
Pope Paul II, birth name Pietro Barbo, was the leader of the Papal States and head of the Roman Catholic Church from August 30, 1464, until 1471. During his reign, he amassed many significant collections of antiquities and artworks.
Background & Early Religious Career
Venice, Italy, was his birthplace. He was the maternal nephew of Pope Eugenius IV. In 1440, at age 23, Pope Eugenius made him a cardinal-deacon. However, before being a cardinal, he had served as the Bishop of Vicenza and Cervia and the Archdeacon of Bologna. He became the archpriest of “The Vatican Basilica” in 1445.
Election & Catholic Pope
On August 30, 1464, he succeeded Pope Pius II to become the leader of the Catholic Church. Thus, fourteen out of the nineteen cardinals present at the papal conclave voted in his favor.
During his reign as Pope, he set aside all the “capitulations” which made his tenure an absolute monarchy and was inaccessible.
He built the Palazzo Venezia and made a distinct papal tiara for himself filled with sapphires, topaz, diamonds, emeralds and large pearls.
In December 1466, he excommunicated King George of Bohemia. He later persuaded Matthias I Corvinus to declare war against King George in 1468.
Death
On July 26, 1471, he died at age 54 from a sudden heart attack in Rome, Papal States.
