About Pope Pius VI
Pope Pius VI was in charge of the Catholic Church and the Papal States from February 15, 1775 until August 29, 1799. He began his career in the church as Cardinal Tommaso Ruffo’s private secretary and went on to serve as his auditor in the office of the Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals. He also served Popes Benedict XIV, Clement XII and Clement XIV before the latter made him a cardinal in 1773. He was in opposition to the French Revolution and its subsequent repression of the Catholic Church in France. The revolutionists invaded the Papal States and took him as a prisoner in 1798. He is one of the longest-serving popes in history.
