About Pope Pius XI
Pope Pius XI was an Italian who became Pope of the Roman Catholic Church in 1922 after succeeding Pope Benedict XV. He reigned as Pope from that time until his death in 1939. Prior to his elevation to the papacy, he held a number of posts in the Catholic Church, including the post of Archbishop of Milan and Cardinal-Priest of Santi Silvestro e Martino ai Monti. One of his accomplishments during his pontificate was overseeing the signing of the Lateran Treaty between Italy and the Vatican in 1929 which made the Vatican a sovereign state.
