Potter Stewart was a remarkable 20th-century American attorney and judge. He is remembered for serving as an Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court between 1958 and 1981.
Background & Education
He graduated from Hotchkiss School in 1933 and later enrolled at Yale University. In 1937, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale. He then read international law at the University of Cambridge and earned a Bachelor of Laws from Yale Law School in 1941.
Career & Positions
He was admitted to the Ohio and New York bar in 1941. During World War II, he served in the “United States Navy Reserve.” However, after the war, he worked on the “Cincinnati City Council.”
In 1954, he was appointed a judge on the “US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.” Then in 1958, President Dwight Eisenhower made him an Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court, serving until his retirement in 1981.
Major Cases
He wrote majority and dissenting opinions in notable cases, including “Jacobellis v. Ohio,” “Jones v. Alfred H. Mayer Co.,” and “Engel v. Vitale.” He was famed for using the expression “I know it when I see it.”
Cause of Death
The prominent judge died from a stroke during December of 1985.
