About Primo Carnera
Before announcing his retirement in 1945, Italian boxer Primo Carnera held the record for the most wins by way of knockouts. Known for his heavy punches, Carnera recorded his first professional win in 1928 when he defeated Leon Sebilo.
He established his name in the sport in 1933 when he won the World Heavyweight Championship after beating Jack Sharkey. He defended his title a number of times before losing it to Max Baer in 1934.
Other activities
A lover of combat sports, Carnera shifted his attention to wrestling a year after retiring from boxing. During his time in the sport, he fought against many well-known professionals like Lou Thesz, Ed "Strangler" Lewis and Yvon Robert.
He also made a name for himself in the movie industry. He played one of the key roles in the film “The Prizefighter and the Lady” which was released in 1933. Other films that he starred in were “Mighty Joe Young” and “A Kid for Two Farthings”.
Private Life
His marriage to Giuseppina Kovačič produced two kids named Giovanna Maria and Umberto.
Trivia
He stood at 6 ft 6 in. Aside from his usual work, he also owned a restaurant.
In the 2008 film “Carnera: The Walking Mountain”, his character was played by Andrea Iaia.
