About Primo Levi
Primo Levi began his career as a chemist but was best known for his work as an author. During his early years, he worked at a mining site in the San Vittore municipality after failing to find permanent work.
His career came to a halt in 1944 when he was captured by the Nazis and sent to one of the Auschwitz prison centers. He was released the following year and started his career as a writer. He began with a memoir in 1947 titled “If This Is a Man”. He was famously known for his “The Periodic Table” short stories, published in 1975.
Family
His father Cesare was an employee of the Ganz manufacturing company. His mother was called Ester, but was famously known as Rina. He had a sister named Anna Maria and was married to Lucia Morpurgo with whom he had two kids.
Education
He studied at the Massimo d'Azeglio Royal Gymnasium before graduating from the University of Turin.
Achievements
His book “The Periodic Table” was named the “best science book ever” by the Royal Institution of Great Britain.
Death
After falling from a three-story building, the Italian sustained multiple injuries which later caused his death in 1987.
Trivia
A practitioner of the Jewish faith, Levi survived the Holocaust which took place from 1941 to 1945.
In 2004, Antony Sher adapted his “If This Is a Man” book into a play which was titled “Primo”.
