Princess Beatrice was the last born and fifth daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert. Her parents affectionately called her “Baby.” She is most remembered for her remarkable marriage to Prince Henry of Battenberg.

Early Life

She was in many ways a solitary but funny child. Beatrice became the most preferred child of the Queen, as she provided her with comfort and could make her smile sometimes. This made her intended role in the royal family to be the Queen’s secretary, helper, and companion.

Many suitors approached her before her marriage, including Napoléon Eugéne, Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, Prince Louis of Battenberg, and Prince Alexander. However, they were all rejected, and Queen Victoria was also not in approval because she didn’t want her to leave her home.

Marriage

She married Prince Henry of Battenberg on July 23, 1885, at the St Mildred’s Church, Whippingham. Although Queen Victoria was initially in disapproval of the marriage, she approved after years of persuasion on the condition the couple would stay at her home after their marriage. Prince Henry and Beatrice agreed to the condition and stayed with her at her home throughout their marriage.

Death

She lived for 84 years and died on 26 October 1944 at Brantridge Park, Sussex, England.
