About Prosper Mérimée
Prosper Mérimée was a writer during the era of Romanticism and was one of the founding fathers of the novella, with his work “Carmen” known as one of his best novellas.
Early Years
He was born in Paris, France to Léonor and Anne Mérimée, who were both painters. He decided to study law but later switched to studying Russian, English, Spanish, and Greek. When he was 19, Mérimée wrote his first play “Cromwell.”
Literary Works
Mérimée took to short story writing, which often featured themes of mysteries and history. His background in Russian helped him become one of the first known interpreters of Russian literature in his home country. Some of his works include: “Mateo Falcone”, “Tamango”, “Colomba”, and “Lokis.”
He was also an advocate for architectural preservation and wrote extensively on archaeology, including “Les Peintures de St. Savin” and “Notes d’un voyage dans la midi de la France.”
