About Quino
Quino was the pen name of internationally acclaimed Argentinian cartoonist Joaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón. He was best known for creating the famous comic strip “Mafalda,” which has received global appeal since its release in the 1960s.
Background & Early Life
He was named after his uncle and was later nicknamed “Quino” when he studied cartooning under him. At age 17, he abandoned his formal education with the intent to become a full-time cartoonist. He then began to sell his illustration, and the “Esto Es” magazine published his earliest humor page.
Career Highlights
He published his earliest compilation book, “Mundo Quino,” in 1963. In the same year, he also developed advertising illustrations to help build the brand of the “Mansfield” electrical appliance company. He developed his famous “Mafalda” character while developing the advertising pages for “Mansfield.” However, the company never executed the advertisement. He eventually published the first story of Malfalda in “Leoplán.”
Mafalda subsequently became a regular in the “Primera Plana” weekly magazine and was published in “El Mundo” between 1965 and 1967. It was also translated into over ten languages.
In 2020, he used the Malfada character to promote COVID-19 awareness.
Death
In 2017, he was diagnosed with glaucoma, which later caused him partial blindness. He died aged 88 on September 30, 2020.
