About R. K. Narayan
Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami, better known as R. K. Narayan, was amongst the first few leading authors to write Indian literature in the English language. He was known for creating Malgudi, a fictional town in South India where his novels and short stories are set. With the help of British writer Graham Greene, he found publishers for his first four novels. His novels include “The Financial Expert”, “Swami and Friends”, “The English Teacher” and “The Guide”, which was adapted into a Bollywood film.
Family Life
He was raised in Madras, British India by his maternal grandmother, Parvati for the years that his headmaster father was on transfer to other towns. He had two sisters and five brothers. He was married to a woman named Rajam from 1934 to 1939, when she died of typhoid. They had a daughter together.
Achievements
He received the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship, the AC Benson Medal, and Padma Vibhushan.
Death
He died at 94 years old on May 13, 2001.
