A World War I and II hero, General Ralph Royce led a unit, which was named after him, to defeat the Japanese occupation in the Philippines.
Early Life
Born in 1890 in Michigan, Royce attended the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1910 and was known as a brilliant student. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1914 and the following year he was assigned to the Signal Corps Aviation School in California where he became a junior aviator in 1916.
Career
By 1917, Royce was a captain and was stationed at the Western Front in France. He was awarded Croix de Guerre for his exemplary leadership. Following his promotion to colonel in 1941, he was assigned to the American Embassy in London, where he served as a military attaché. During World War II, he led a mission with a small squad known as the “Royce Squad '' stationed in Australia to destroy the Japanese blockade. This gallant officer was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for completing the mission successfully. After the war, he served in various capacities, including Commanding General US Army Forces in the Middle East and Commanding General Personnel Distribution Command. He retired in 1946.
