Ralph Waldo Emerson was a poet and essayist. He is known for leading the Transcendentalist movement in the mid 1800s.

His Work

Emerson was not at first a transcendentalist. His defining work was the essay Nature. It asked questions about why people don't accept the beauty of nature, and it talks about how humans are distracted by the demands of the world. After this, he gave a famous speech called “The American Scholar.” In this, he mainly talked about how the U.S. should work to make itself more distinct from Europe. He has wrote many essays since, most about individualism and freedom
