About Raoul Wallenberg
Swedish diplomat, architect, businessman and humanitarian, Raoul Wallenberg remains a hero amongst modern Jews. He is remembered for having rescued thousands of Jews in Hungary from being sent off to be killed as part of the Holocaust by German Nazis and fascists from Hungary. He had been stationed in Budapest as a special envoy beginning from July 1944. He issued Jews with protective passports and even housed them in Swedish territory-designated buildings to help them escape mass deportation from Hungary to Nazi concentration camps.
Family Life
He was the son of Swedish naval officer Raoul Oscar Wallenberg and his wife, Maria Sofia Wising. He was the half-brother of Swedish physicist Guy von Dardel and businesswoman Nina Lagergren.
Honors
He was posthumously honoured by several countries for his heroism, including being made an honorary citizen of the United States and Canada.
Death
He reportedly died on July 17, 1947 as a prisoner in Lubyanka in Moscow, the Soviet Union.
