About Raymond Aron
Born as Raymond Claude Ferdinand Aron, Raymond Aron was known to be one of the greatest French philosophers during the 1900s. He was also recognized as the founder of the French quarterly magazine Commentaire in 1978.
Family and Education
Aron was the son of Gustave Emile Aron and Suzanne Aron. His alma maters included Ecole Normale Superieure and the University of Paris.
He had a long marital relationship with Suzanne Aron, whom he married in 1933 and had a son with.
Career Highlights
The French philosopher began his career as a teacher in several schools such as the University of Toulouse, Ecole Nationale d’Administration and the College de France. Also, the subject he mostly taught in the said schools was sociology.
He was also a journalist and he worked for media firms such as Le Figaro and L’Express. He also wrote several articles and essays, including “Introduction to the Philosophy of History: An Essay on the Limits of Historical Objectivity'' (1948) and “Dimensions de la conscience historique” (1961).
Raymond Aron was very engaged in politics and he wrote how he felt about politics. Some of those ideas of his were contained in his books “Peace and War” and “Democratie et totalitarisme”.
Achievement
In 1960, he was named as the Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Death
The Paris-born philosopher and journalist died due to a heart attack.
Trivia
Raymond Aron’s works inspired other philosophers like Marcel Gauchet, Jean-Francois Revel, Allan Bloom and Henry Kissinger. The latter was a German-born American who served as the U.S. Secretary of State in administrations of President Nixon and President Gerald Ford.
