About Red Byron
Robert Nold Byron, better known as Red Byron, was a decorated veteran of World War II (WWII). He won the first Modified championship in 1948 and became a universally recognized member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Byron was undoubtedly one of the top stock car racers in the late 1940s.
Background
He began racing in 1932 and saw some degree of success. In July 1941, he won his first stock car race. His racing career was put on hold while he was a flight engineer on B-24 Liberator bombers in the US Army Air Forces during World War II. A B-24 Liberator bomber explosion during combat almost cost him his left leg.
At Seminole Speedway in 1946, he placed first in a race after the war. He started competing in 1948 with Raymond Parks' team in the newly established NASCAR Modified Series. He ran a sports car racing team in the 1950s.
Owing to poor personal health, the race driver had to retire in 1951.
