About Red Holzman
The American-born and former professional basketball player, Red Holzman is one of a few people to win an NBA title both as a player and coach. Holzman was also inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1986.
Early Life
The basketball player was born to Jewish parents and has Romanian and Russian ancestry. He first enrolled in the Franklin K. Lane High School, graduated, and went on to enroll in the University of Baltimore but later opted to graduate from the City College of New York in 1942.
Holzman also joined the United Navy seals in 1942 and continued to play basketball until he was discharged from active duty in 1945.
Career
The basketball star made his professional debut with the Rochester Royals in 1945 and stayed with the team until 1953, during which he won an NBA championship with the team. He then played for the Milwaukee Hawks from 1953 until his retirement from professional basketball in 1954.
Career as Coach
The basketball player transitioned to coaching and first coached the St. Louis Hawks team from 1953 to 1957. He then coached Leones de Ponce from 1963 to 1967 and later coached the New York Nicks from 1967 to 1977. He had a second spell with the latter team, which lasted from 1978 to 1982.
