About René Angélil
Though he was mainly known as the husband of celebrated singer Céline Dion, René Angélil was also celebrated for his role in developing the Canadian music industry. He started his career as a singer in 1961 when he formed the rock band known as Les Baronets.
After recording a number of tunes with the collective, he teamed up with Guy Cloutier to work as an artiste manager. This gave him the opportunity to work with some prominent names such as Ginette Reno, René Simard, and Céline Dion.
As a poker
Aside from music, he was also known to be a poker player. In 2005, he participated in the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions. He performed remarkably well at the World Poker Tour in 2007.
Family
His parents were Joseph Angélil and Alice Sara. He shared some memorable days with his brother André. Between 1966 and 1972, he was married to a lady called Denyse Duquette. Two years after their divorce, he tied the knot with singer Anne Renée, but their union was annulled in 1985.
His much publicized marriage to songstress Céline Dion began in 1994. The couple had three kids named Rene-Charles, Nelson, Eddy.
Education
He was a student of Collège Saint-Viateur before joining Collège André-Grasset.
Honors
He was named the “Manager of the Year” at the 1987 and 1988 Félix Award ceremonies. He was decorated with the Order of Canada in 2013.
Trivia
In 2021, an asteroid discovered by Michel Ory was named after him.
He and Céline Dion sued Allô Vedettes for defamation and demanded an amount of $5 million in damages.
