About René Descartes
René Descartes was a French philosopher and mathematician widely regarded as the father of modern western philosophy. His most famous philosophical statement is: "I think, therefore I am” from his book the Discourse on the Method.
He attended the Jesuit Collège Royal Henry-Le-Grand where he studied mathematics and physics. He continued his education at the University of Poitiers and earned a law degree at the age of 22 before going on to advance his knowledge in mathematics.
He was the son of Joachim Descartes and Jeanne Brochard. He was the youngest of his parents’ three children. He never got married. He had a relationship with a female servant Helena Jans van der Strom. The relationship led to the birth of his only child, a daughter named Francine born in 1635.
