About René Favaloro
René Favaloro was one of the prominent cardiac surgeons of his era in Argentina. His remarkable work landed him the Gift Teacher Award from the American College of Cardiology in 1992.
Family and Education
He grew up with his family in La Plata, Argentina. He was the son of Juan Manuel Favaloro and Geni Ida Raffaeli. The surgeon is an alumnus of Colegio Nacional de La Plata and National University of La Plata.
In 1951, he began a marital journey with Maria Antonia Delgado but after 47 years of marriage, the couple parted company.
Career
After graduating from the university in the early 1900s, he worked as a rural physician. Few years later, he travelled to Cleveland and joined the surgical team of a Cleveland-based clinic. The surgeon’s specialty was treating valvular and congenital diseases but he also worked in other fields.
Favaloro was well recognized as the cardiac surgeon who was the first to work on coronary artery bypass surgery with the use of a saphenous vein. This revelation brought about an improvement in the treatment of coronary disease.
Accomplishments
The Argentine was honored a number of times, including receiving The Gairdner Foundation International Award, Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement and the Prince Mahidol Award.
Death
He committed suicide through gunshot for reason being that he was neck deep in debt.
Trivia
He established the Fundacion Favaloro to advance practice in surgery in Argentina and other parts of the world.
