About René Lacoste
International Tennis Hall-of-Famer René Lacoste is famous for creating the Lacoste (“The Crocodile”) tennis T-shirt brand in 1929.
Lacoste started playing tennis at the age of 15.
His first major competition was in the Wimbledon Championships in 1922. His first major milestone was at the 1925 French Championships when he won the singles title.
René Lacoste married Simone de la Chaume, a golfing champion at the time. They had a daughter named Catherine Lacoste, who turned out to be a prolific golfer as well.
At the peak of his career [late 1920’s – early 1930’s], he was one of the famous “Four Musketeers” known to have dominated the tennis game. The other three were Henri Cochet, Jacques Brugnon, and Jean Borotra.
Rather than exhibiting a natural talent for tennis like his contemporaries, the accomplished tennis player was known for his meticulous, well-calculated style of play. He was a baseline player, underpinning his style on accuracy and signature deeply-placed, difficult-to-counter groundstrokes.
Lacoste Clothing Line
René Lacoste co-founded “La Société Chemise Lacoste”, a clothing line that was responsible for the Lacoste T-shirt brand. The company also designed the first tubular steel tennis racket.
The Tennis Champion died in October 1996, aged 92.

He won a total of 7 grand-slam singles titles. He also won the Davis Cup twice, being part of the team from France [1927, 1928]. He was also designated world No. 1 player twice [1926, 1927].
